La Tribune | Donald Trump declare war on European digital regulation – Maxime Seno

With European digital regulation under scrutiny by the US Congress this Wednesday, our partner Maxime Seno writes for La Tribune about the Trump administration’s targeting of the Digital Services Act (DSA).
The DSA, which imposes obligations on digital platforms to moderate illegal content, is denounced across the Atlantic as “global censorship of freedom of expression,” according to a recent parliamentary report.
For Maxime Seno, this text illustrates the irreconcilable opposition between two conceptions of freedom of expression in the digital space: in Europe, it is regulated and can be limited; in the United States, it is virtually absolute.
He emphasizes that Washington’s objective is clear: by increasing pressure on Big Tech — through procedures led by the Federal Trade Commission, for example — and forcing them into what he describes as “regulatory schizophrenia,” the US authorities intend to turn these players into a “Trojan horse” to delegitimize European regulation.
