Jean Veil speaker at “Les Débats” of the Cercle Montesquieu

Our partner Jean Veil took part in this year’s edition of the Débats du Cercle, during the plenary session devoted to the theme of “The rule of law and business: partnership or risk factor?

His intervention was part of an in-depth reflection on the role of legal actors in the face of contemporary changes and issues, at the intersection of economic, political and democratic stakes.

Moderated by Valérie Senneville, Les Echos, and closed by Franz-Olivier Giesbert, the round table also included :

  • Valerie-Odile DERVIEUX, President of Chamber at the Paris Court of Appeal
  • Patrice Spinosi, Lawyer at the Conseil d’État and the Cour de cassation
  • Jean-Patrice Labautière, Lawyer
  • Martial Houlle, President of the Cercle Montesquieu

Together, following on from Patrice Spinosi’s excellent book Menace sur l’état de droit (Threat to the Rule of Law), they discussed the importance of preserving the rule of law, the risks of undermining it through democratic mechanisms, and the more-than-ever crucial importance of the separation of powers.
In the face of normative inflation accompanied by increasingly severe sanctions, they also discussed the integration by companies of compliance, social justice and environmental regulation, and their ability to influence the strengthening of the rule of law while adapting to economic realities.

Veil Jourde would like to thank the Cercle Montesquieu and Lexposia for this invitation, and for the high quality of the dialogue created around these structuring subjects.
